Scotland's precious stocks of wild salmon need protecting -
"Choose organically farmed salmon or salmon from Freedom Food certified farms only, to ensure that environmental and welfare standards are met," The Marine Conservation Society (MCS).
The MCS is the UK charity dedicated to the protection of the marine environment and its wildlife. Its President is HRH Prince of Wales KTKG GCB.
Given the general concern about farmed salmon we would like to tell you a little more about where all our fresh salmon comes from. We take great pride in knowing the exact provenance of all the produce we buy.
We purchase only Premium Grade Salmon. It is “RSPCA Freedom Food,” certified and sourced from just one independently owned farm.
Please be assured that:
- Top quality, well farmed salmon helps protect precious and scarce Wild Salmon by reducing demand on wild stocks.
- Quality Salmon requires a quality environment
This is why we buy from a farm who understands that it is in their interest and that of the local community to respect and preserve their pristine waters.
The fish are farmed in high current, deep sea lochs to the highest standards of welfare:
- Significantly low stocking densities so that they can swim freely
- Fed a diet of quality fish meal, derived from small fish, which they would eat in the wild, and which contain natural carotenoids which result in the pink flesh.
- No GM ingredients, growth promoters or chemical supplements.
- Hand fed to ensure no waste and maintain clean waters
Wester Ross Fisheries are Scotland's oldest independent salmon farmers. They hand rear Scottish Salmon, approved by the RSPCA Freedom Food Scheme and produce a consistent and great quality all year.

Our salmon are raised in pens through which flow thousands of cubic metres of water each day. They can swim freely, although their natural tendency is to shoal, similar to many other pelagic fish. Over the salmon’s lifetime they swim the equivalent of many thousand of miles, as they would in the wild.
Our salmon are fed a diet of high quality fish meal and fish oils derived from wild caught small fish, such as capelin, which they would eat in the wild. The feed contains carotenoid pigments, of which there are 600 naturally occurring pigments, resulting in the pink flesh colour, and also have an essential nutrient effect on the health and well-being of the salmon. Feeds are free from all genetically modified ingredients.
